“Not all Muslims are terrorists.” This statement seems to be the quintessence of the European response to the outburst of international terrorism. It is the major reflex of a continent, which is still not able to draw the right conclusion from its past. Of course, Muslims are not all terrorists. However, only to repeat a widely accepted truth endlessly is a useless strategy to protect our open societies. Would the insight that not all Germans were national-socialist have lessened the insanity and danger of Hitler? Does anybody believe that Marx represents the values and opinions of the “proletarians of all countries” at large? Let us instead learn the right lessons from history and recognize the real face of our enemy. Let us identify the lasting rise of a third totalitarianism. It is indeed not the private commitment to Allah that should worry us. But a vivid ideology is spreading, replacing the absolute and enforced devotedness to a supreme race or a ruling class by obedience to an aggressive and primitive understanding of god. This is the nature of Islamism.
